NHS Trusts - Data Protection: Can you afford not to comply?

We have recently seen the Information Commissioner issue 4 monetary penalties ranging from £70,000 to £325,000 to NHS bodies for unlawful disclosure of personal information resulting in a breach of the Data Protection Act. The latest two penalties of £225,000 and £325,000 are by far the largest so far issued and brings the total to 20 penalties across all sectors totalling just over £2 million since the Information Commissioner received the power to issue monetary penalties in April 2010.
